Communities in 37 states will be involved.
The Environmental Protection Agency announced it will fund 132 projects for monitoring air pollution in 37 states. Funds from the COVID-19 stimulus package and climate, tax, and healthcare bills will pay for the grants in the $53.4 million project.
EPA Administrator Michael Regan said, “This is the largest investment in air pollution monitoring in EPA’s history.” He added, “The air monitoring projects…will ensure dozens of overburdened communities have the tools they need to better understand air quality challenges in their neighborhoods and help protect people from the challenges posed by air pollution.”
Communities in 37 states will participate, including urban areas such as Miami-Dade County, Florida, and Detroit, Michigan, as well as smaller towns and some tribal reservations. One of the places that will be monitored in Louisiana has been notoriously referred to as “Cancer Alley.”
